Israel v Republic of Ireland: Republic of Ireland confirm rescheduled news conference before controversial Israel game

The Republic of Ireland men's national football team postponed its scheduled press conference ahead of their Nations League match against Israel to be played in Hungary. Boycott calls stemming from the Israel-Gaza war and lengthy discussions among the players have raised questions over whether the match will take place.

Boycott Calls and Internal Team Situation

The Republic of Ireland's match against Israel is facing intense protests due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war. Boycott calls led by the Irish Sport for Palestine group are also supported by figures such as Brian Kerr and James McClean.

Players within the team have also expressed varying views on the matter. While Jason Knight argued that the match should not be played, Chiedozie Ogbene stated that the public should reduce the pressure on the players.

Press Conference and Training Uncertainty

The press conference, planned to be held with head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson and a player, was initially postponed until after training upon notification by UEFA officials, and subsequently the training schedule was also suspended.

During the players' prolonged meeting at the hotel, claims emerged that goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu had withdrawn from the squad and that some other players were considering a similar decision.

Future of the Match and Planned Process

Following the uncertainty, once the players left the meeting room, it was decided to hold the press conference at the team hotel instead of the stadium. The team's training schedule was also updated and rescheduled.

Following the match against Israel, the Republic of Ireland has another fixture away in Serbia on October 4. UEFA has not made an official statement regarding the reasons for the postponements.
