Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged residents in coastal areas to stay in their homes until the danger passes, as the severe Category 4 Hurricane Simon approaches the country's west-central coast.
Location and Intensity of the Hurricane
According to data from the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the Category 4 storm is located about 105 kilometers west-northwest of the port city of Manzanillo in Colima state.
With maximum sustained winds reaching up to 230 kilometers per hour, the hurricane continues to move north-northwest at a speed of 11 kilometers per hour.
Authorities Call to Stay Indoors
President Claudia Sheinbaum requested that residents living in coastal municipalities across the states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, and Michoacan remain in shelters until authorities announce that the danger has passed.
While preventive evacuations continue uninterrupted in the region, citizens have been asked to stay off the streets and comply with civil protection instructions.
Measures Taken at the Port and City
In Manzanillo, Mexico's largest port, civil protection teams closed beaches, set up barriers, and raised danger warning flags.
While flooding occurred in some parts of the city, soldiers and National Guard troops were deployed in the Alameda neighborhood.
Critical Alerts and Closed Areas
The National Coordination of Civil Protection raised 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima to the highest cyclone alert level, and 93 municipalities to a high alert level.
The Puerto Vallarta international airport was temporarily closed to traffic, non-essential activities were suspended, and emergency shelters were opened.
