Ruling United Russia Party Strengthens Majority in Russian Parliamentary Elections
In the first parliamentary elections held under the shadow of the Ukraine war, the United Russia party significantly increased its number of seats in parliament amidst a process where the opposition was excluded.
According to the results of Russia's first wartime parliamentary elections announced on Monday, the Kremlin-backed United Russia party further increased its control in parliament, achieving a record dominance.
Election Results and Parliamentary Distribution
With over 95 percent of the votes counted, the United Russia party secured 355 seats in the 450-seat State Duma, the lower house of parliament. According to Central Election Commission data, the party received nearly 58 percent of the vote and also won 208 races in single-member constituencies.
First Elections in Wartime
This process marks the first parliamentary election held since President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale military offensive against Ukraine in 2022. It was also recorded as the first vote to include residents in four Ukrainian regions annexed by the Moscow administration.
Voting Process and Security Measures
Spanning three days from Friday to Sunday, voter turnout exceeded 59 percent. Conducted under strict state control with genuine opposition largely excluded, the elections took place against the backdrop of intense drone attacks launched by Ukraine.
