Nepal ends search for thousands of flood victims, leaving some families angry and others relieved

Following the devastating floods that occurred in Nepal in August and led to thousands of people going missing, search and rescue operations have been officially halted. The decision made by the Prime Minister's office has sparked mixed reactions among the families of the missing, ranging from anger to acceptance for their grieving processes.

Search and Rescue Operations Halted

The government of Nepal announced that search and rescue efforts, which had been ongoing following the disaster that caused massive destruction in the country, have been halted. In line with this decision made by Prime Minister Balendra Shah's office, it was stated that from now on, emphasis will be placed on rehabilitation and reconstruction work instead of rescue operations.

The Scale of the Financial Toll Emerged

According to statements made by officials, the bodies of at least 1,455 people have been recovered so far following the disaster. Meanwhile, 5,285 people, including foreign nationals, remain missing, and the government's total cost estimates run into billions of dollars.

Reconstruction and Infrastructure Works

With the conclusion of search operations, authorities will focus on repairing roads and bridges, particularly in remote areas cut off from transportation. The flood disaster affected approximately 33,000 people, while over 7,500 homes were damaged and rendered unusable.

Mixed Reactions from Families of the Missing

The government's decision caused mixed emotions among families. While some families reacted angrily to the abandonment of search efforts, others understood the decision in order to obtain official death certificates and complete their grieving processes.

Death Certificates and Legal Processes

Relatives of the missing need official death certificates for compensation, insurance, and inheritance procedures. However, since Nepalese laws are not yet fully prepared for these processes, authorities are required to amend the legislation.
