Abortion Controversy and Medical Diagnosis
Intended parents Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar had requested that West terminate the pregnancy after a 20-week scan revealed that the fetus had a severe heart defect.
However, the surrogate mother refused this request and traveled to Texas, where nearly all abortions are illegal, and gave birth to the baby there.
Birth and Intervention in Texas
Born last month with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the baby received necessary medical care and surgery in the state thanks to the intervention of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Legal Process and Conflicting Decisions
West stated that she turned down the abortion requests after learning about treatment options and wanting to protect the baby, expressing concern that the biological parents would not provide the necessary medical care.
Meanwhile, a California court granted parental rights to Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar, while a Texas court issued a restraining order preventing West from seeing the child.
