Tanzania's Resigning Vice President Expelled from Governing Party

Tanzania's governing Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has expelled Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who announced his resignation this week, on grounds of indiscipline. The party's Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro, announced that Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi has been nominated to replace Nchimbi.

Expulsion Decision and New Nominee

Tanzania's governing Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has expelled Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who decided to resign, from the party on charges of indiscipline. CCM Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro announced that Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi has been designated as the new vice-presidential nominee to replace Nchimbi.

Stating that his resignation will take effect on September 4, Nchimbi expressed that he would continue to remain a "good citizen" of his country. Analysts indicate that behind Nchimbi's resignation lie differences of opinion with President Samia Suluhu Hassan regarding governance and the harsh crackdowns on protests.

Post-Election Tension and Violence

The roots of the political crisis trace back to the controversial October elections, where protests that erupted over the disqualification of President Hassan's opponents were suppressed by security forces. During this period, the internet was shut down for days, for which Hassan later apologized and promised would not happen again.

Mohamed Chande Othman, head of the commission investigating post-election violence, announced in his report that at least 518 people lost their lives, though the actual death toll could be higher. Hassan's main rival, Tundu Lissu, remains in prison on treason charges that he claims are politically motivated.

Tanzania's Test of Political Stability
