A handwritten letter written in 1787 by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the US, intended to guide the country's future leaders, has been put up for sale by a private collector through the Raab Collection with a guide price of $285,000.

The historical letter and accompanying scientific book, previously exhibited at Texas A&M University, were put on sale through the Pennsylvania-based historical artifact and document dealer Raab Collection.

Nathan Raab, president of the collection, stated that the guide price set for the piece is $285,000 and that this document is one of the most impressive materials they have ever handled.

The historical document was penned while Jefferson was in Paris during his tenure as the US minister to France.

The letter was sent to his friend David Rittenhouse, a scientist and member of the American Philosophical Society, on the same day the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia concluded.
