Tom Cruise's Film Digger Faces Prospects of Massive Box Office Losses
The dark comedy film Digger, starring Tom Cruise, is at risk of losing approximately $245 million due to its high budget and low box office earnings.
According to Hollywood analysts, the film Digger, in which Tom Cruise plays an oil tycoon, is preparing to experience one of the biggest losses in cinema history due to its weak box office performance. During the same period, The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, also fell short of expectations on its opening weekend.
Expected Massive Loss
Considering its production and marketing costs, Tom Cruise's starring vehicle Digger is projected to incur a loss of approximately $245 million.
Experiencing a 60 percent drop in ticket sales during its second weekend in theaters, the satirical dark comedy has grossed a total of about $35 million globally.
Budget and Revenue Balance
Having spent approximately $280 million on production and marketing, Warner Bros studio could wrap up the film's global box office run at around $50 million, according to Variety magazine.
While studio officials state the film needs $300 million to break even, analysts indicate this figure could reach $350 million including expenses.
Among Historic Box Office Flops
This financial performance places the Digger production in the same category as high-budget historic box office flops such as Cutthroat Island, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Sahara, and John Carter.
The Social Reckoning Struggles at the Box Office
The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin and starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Strong, and Jeremy Allen White, also had a tough time at the box office on its opening weekend.
Grossing $5.5 million in the U.S. and about $9 million globally, the film lagged behind its 2010-released predecessor.
