The United Nations issued an urgent appeal for aid, warning that health risks facing displaced persons in Gaza are increasing due to the approaching winter months.

Winter Season and Health Risks

The United Nations drew attention to the public health difficulties that displaced Gazans will experience with the approach of winter. Officials emphasized that crowded living conditions in tent cities directly increase the risk of disease.

Capacity of the Health System

Conveying the findings of World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that Gaza's existing health system is at its limits. The system is in a condition where it cannot handle further increases in diseases and ailments.

Flood and Sewage Hazard

It is assessed that as winter progresses and rainfall begins in the besieged enclave, floodwaters may spread sewage waste and contaminated water to densely populated areas. It is stated that this situation will bring serious disease risks.

Urgent Need for Resources and Access

Ghebreyesus called for an urgent increase in access to limited laboratory and diagnostic supplies, essential medicines, rehabilitation equipment, and public health services. Although the UN and humanitarian partners are supporting preparations, more resources are needed.
