Experts stated that due to emissions caused by the use of coal, oil, and gas, the world will soon exceed the recently agreed-upon safe temperature limit.
Temporary Overshoot Strategy
Emphasizing that the fight has not been abandoned, scientists and officials outlined a new roadmap. This strategy involves allowing temperatures to temporarily overshoot to excessive highs, followed by ending fossil fuel use and reducing temperatures back down to safe levels by the end of the century using carbon capture technologies.
Inevitable Environmental Impacts
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that humanity is rapidly passing the limit to prevent a climate catastrophe. It was noted that this situation will mean an increase in weather-related disasters, rising sea levels, species extinction, melting glaciers, and ice sheets in the coming decades.
A Realistic Assessment
Richard Betts, a climate scientist at the University of Exeter and a co-author of the report, stated that this situation is a reality check and that people will have to live with a warmer world. However, Betts underscored that there are still numerous steps that can be taken to limit warming and protect the future.
