US Closely Monitors Suspected Plague Case in Russia

The United States Department of State announced that it is closely monitoring a reported suspected and fatal case of pneumonic plague in Russia's Irkutsk Oblast region and has demanded that Moscow promptly share accurate information.
Suspended Case in Russia Under Close Watch
U.S. State Department officials stated that they are closely monitoring the reported suspected plague death that occurred in Irkutsk Oblast, located in southeastern Siberia.
While emphasizing that details regarding the incident have not yet been officially verified, the Washington administration called on Moscow to share the information it holds transparently.
Intelligence and Health Agencies Involved
It was stated that the process is being coordinated alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal agencies, while intelligence units are gathering data on the matter.
Officials noted that plague cases can occur naturally in many parts of the world and that developments are being examined closely.
Early Treatment and Antibiotic Use
Experts underlined that pneumonic plague can be treated successfully with common antibiotics if diagnosed in the early stages.
It was reported that appropriate antimicrobial therapy, administered intravenously or orally depending on the course and severity of the disease, should be started immediately.
