A court in the United States has sentenced a former Syrian official who ran a notorious prison during Bashar al-Assad's regime to 60 years in prison on charges of torture and immigration fraud.
Court Decision and Verdict
A US federal court in Los Angeles handed down the heaviest sentence yet against a former official of the Bashar al-Assad regime, sentencing the defendant to 60 years in prison.
Announcing the decision at the hearing, US District Judge Hernan D. Vera officially mandated the prison sentence against the defendant.
Adra Prison and 'Wing 13'
Samir Osman al-Sheikh served as the director of the Adra prison near Damascus between 2005 and 2008.
It was stated that during this period, he supervised the underground punishment wing known as 'Wing 13', where inmates were subjected to severe torture.
Legal Process and Arrest
Last March, he was found guilty by a federal jury of torturing inmates and lying on US immigration forms.
The official settled in the United States in 2020 and obtained a green card, and was arrested in July 2024 at Los Angeles International Airport.
Historic Significance of the Trial
The 74-year-old defendant is not only the first Assad regime official to be tried in the US, but also the highest-ranking regime official to personally appear in court anywhere in the world.
This case has been recorded as the most significant sentence handed down by a foreign court with the personal attendance of an official from the Assad regime.
