Emphasizing that the diplomatic door remains open, Wright stated that economic pressure and military options are on the table.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated during television appearances on Sunday morning that an agreement preventing a nuclear-armed Iran might not be reached. Noting that negotiations have come to a standstill, the official drew attention to the difficulty of reaching a compromise under current conditions.

Military Options and Diplomacy

Wright noted that new military steps to eliminate Iran's nuclear capacity remain on the agenda. On the other hand, he added that diplomatic contacts have not been completely severed and that the US is always open to a possible agreement.

Economic Pressure and Regional Embargo

Stating that one of the biggest roles of the American military presence in the region is to halt Iran's energy exports, Wright conveyed that the economy is being choked with the aim of forcing the regime to change its policy or bring about a new leadership.

Security of the Strait of Hormuz

Answering questions regarding the security of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, Wright avoided declaring the region safe unless they are escorted by the US Navy. It was reported that August was a heavily loss-making month for commercial vessels in the region.
