The body of a woman was found early Saturday morning at a hotel in Naha City on Japan's southern island of Okinawa. Following investigations, a US Marine stationed in the region was arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery. Local broadcaster NHK reported that the victim was 39-year-old Anna Yagi, and the suspect was 20-year-old Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as "brutal and heinous," stating that it had caused great outrage. The Prime Minister demanded that the United States side implement much stricter disciplinary measures regarding its military personnel.
