Tanner Thomas, a UT Martin civil engineering student, reinforced his theoretical knowledge with industry projects during his summer internship.

Internship Experience and Career Decision

UT Martin junior civil engineering student Tanner Thomas solidified his professional goals through his summer internship at Marine Solutions.

Working at the company's Paducah, Kentucky office, the student found the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world projects.

Fieldwork and Project Activities

As part of the internship program, he participated in critical fieldwork such as underwater bridge inspections, acoustic sonar imaging, and project scoping.

Marine Solutions senior engineer Brian Giltner stated that the intern contributed to many different areas such as bridge reviews, land surveys, and drawing revisions.

Tools Used and Future Plans

During the internship, he gained proficiency in industry software such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Excel, as well as various design tools.

Continuing his education and expected to graduate in spring 2028, the student expressed that he is preparing for his future career with the practical experience he gained.
