Teams competing in the Women's Basketball World Cup were evacuated for the second time in three days following a fire alarm at their hotel in Berlin. No injuries were reported, and no changes were made to the tournament schedule.
Fire Alarm at the Hotel in the Morning Hours
The hotel accommodating the Women's Basketball World Cup teams in Berlin was evacuated following a fire alarm that went off on Tuesday at 09:06 local time. The teams gathered outside in accordance with security procedures and returned to their rooms after brief inspections.
Reason for Evacuation and Security Measures
According to a statement by FIBA, the alarm was triggered due to a fire that broke out in the garbage room on the underground basement floor of a neighboring parking lot. While police launched an investigation into the incident, the athletes were safely returned to their rooms in a short time.
Second Evacuation Incident Within Three Days
This incident on Tuesday was not the first evacuation during the tournament. On Sunday, a similar precaution was taken due to steam generated during kitchen cleaning, and the hotel was emptied once again.
Tournament Matches and Schedule Status
This setback coincided with the first day of the elimination round. No injuries were reported in the incident prior to the critical matches to be played between Hungary and Japan, and Germany and South Korea, and the match schedule continued as planned.
