According to a new report published by the World Health Organization, 170 million children and adolescents worldwide are facing the problem of obesity.

Increase in Obesity Rates

According to the report published by the World Health Organization, as of 2024, a total of 170 million children and adolescents are living with obesity globally, comprising 70 million children aged 5-9 and 100 million adolescents aged 10-19.

The report states that the prevalence of obesity in the 5-19 age group has quadrupled since 1990, rising from 2 percent to 8 percent.

Impact on Health

The report emphasized that obesity is a chronic and relapsing disease that can be managed with appropriate health care services.

Drawing attention to the fact that the negative health effects of obesity can begin in childhood, it was noted that it can increase the risk of noncommunicable diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Social and Psychological Challenges

The World Health Organization reported that children and adolescents living with obesity may also face discrimination and bullying in society.

It was noted that the prevention and treatment of obesity are of great importance for protecting children's physical and mental health and supporting their educational lives.

Treatment Approaches

The organization announced that it does not recommend the use of medication, bariatric surgery, or weight-loss devices for the treatment of obesity in children aged 0-9.

For adolescents aged 10-19, it was stated that treatment with approved medications may be considered if results cannot be achieved through comprehensive lifestyle programs.
