Effects on Reproductive Health
The World Health Organization shared its current report with the public, covering the period between 2000 and 2026 and investigating the effects of tobacco use on reproductive health. The report emphasized that tobacco use decreases the chances of having a baby.
Risk of Infertility in Women
The report stated that the risk of infertility in women who use tobacco can be 40 percent higher compared to women who do not use tobacco. It was noted that secondhand smoke also affects fertility and that this risk encompasses non-smokers as well.
Benefits of Quitting Smoking
It was emphasized that the risk of infertility in women who used to smoke in the past is 25 percent lower compared to those who still smoke. It was pointed out that quitting smoking can help mitigate these harms.
Male Reproductive Health and Treatment
It was recorded that men who smoke may experience more problems with sexual function. Furthermore, it was underlined that tobacco use can reduce the success rate of infertility treatment.
Other Tobacco Products
Attention was drawn to the need for more scientific studies on the effects of electronic cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, waterpipe, and other tobacco products on human health.
