$2.5 Million Funding Secured for Weekly World News Comedy Series

Reno 911! co-creator Robert Ben Garant is stepping outside the Hollywood system to develop an independent six-part comedy series based on the world of the Weekly World News humor magazine. Financed with $2.5 million from six private investors, the project is scheduled to begin filming in Simi Valley, California, in the first week of February 2027.

Cathy Shim, who has a background in Reno 911!, is serving as co-producer and co-showrunner alongside Robert Ben Garant. Commissioned by Weekly World News Studios, the series is co-created, written, and executive produced by the magazine's editor-in-chief, Greg D’Alessandro.

The comedy series, which will be filmed in the improvisational mockumentary style used in Reno 911!, follows the adventures of Weekly World News reporters as they chase stories. The producers plan to pitch the series to various platforms and distributors once filming is complete.
