Statement After the Cabinet
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş shared important information regarding the social media regulations for children following the Cabinet Meeting held at the Presidential Complex.
Age Verification System
Users who want to open an account on social media platforms for the first time will be required to verify their age through a digital code obtained via the e-Government system.
A two-step and continuous age verification mechanism will be applied both during account creation and throughout the usage process to keep young users' safety at the highest level.
Restricted Features
For those between the ages of 15 and 18, potentially addictive features such as scrolling, infinite scrolling, screen recording, and live broadcasting will be removed or restricted.
Security and Suspicion Cases
In the event of a suspicion that an account is being used by a child under the age of 15, the account will be temporarily suspended and redirected to e-Government for re-verification.
Messaging and Privacy
To enhance children's safety, additional protective regulations are also in place, such as allowing only followed accounts to send messages and turning off read receipts.
Calendar and Compliance Process
It was stated that the new regulation will enter into force as of November 1, and platforms will be granted a temporary compliance period until March 31, 2027.
Control Mechanism
It was stated that thanks to the two-way control mechanism, the ministry as well as social media platforms will exercise oversight, with the aim of preventing children from being constantly exposed to advertisements.
