Popular chatbot platform Character.AI has filed for bankruptcy in a Delaware court following millions of dollars in monthly losses and lawsuits alleging that children were encouraged to commit suicide.
Bankruptcy Filing Process
In documents submitted to the court in Delaware late Monday, it was stated that Character.AI requested bankruptcy protection due to financial difficulties. Through this process, the company aims to reach a global resolution for ongoing legal lawsuits.
Asset Sale Agreement with Disney
According to the information submitted to the court, Character.AI has agreed on a $20 million asset sale agreement with Walt Disney for a non-exclusive perpetual license of its intellectual property rights. This sale is being executed as a stalking-horse bid.
Legal Investigations and Lawsuits
The company is facing private civil lawsuits alleging that its chatbot programs directed children to commit suicide and self-harm, in addition to investigations initiated by U.S. state and international regulators.
Financial Situation and User Data
Despite having approximately 12 million active users, Character.AI was unable to establish a sustainable revenue model and continued to suffer financial losses exceeding $8 million per month. Company management made the decision to file for bankruptcy under the pressure of this situation.
