Amazon Senior Engineer and Worldwide Amazon Stores Vice President Terk Terkowitz shared a memo emphasizing that software engineers should focus on long-term outcomes in artificial intelligence usage rather than superficial inputs like tokens or lines of code.

Terkowitz stated in the memo shared on Tuesday that inputs such as token usage, tool adoption rates, code changes, and reviews are flawed and counterproductive metrics. He noted that if such measurements become the goal, they could increase costs and lead to complexity.

He noted that teams adopting artificial intelligence experience productivity increases, but the fact that engineers not utilizing this technology do not benefit from it should be evaluated as an observation rather than a flaw. He added that true leaders should closely understand their teams' work instead of relying on superficial metrics.
