Artificial intelligence, drones and robotics are redefining what’s possible

The 2026 study, conducted in collaboration with Lexipol Media Group and Verizon Frontline, shows that despite budget constraints, first responders have begun actively using artificial intelligence, drones, and robotic systems in their operations.

Scope of the Research

More than a thousand first responder personnel from police, fire, emergency medical services, emergency management, and 911 dispatch units shared their views on future technology tools.

Key Technology Tools

Nearly ninety percent of participants identified smartphones as the most important technology tool in their daily duties, while two-way radios and laptops also maintain their indispensability.

Use of Drones and Robots

Approximately one-quarter of first responders listed drones and robots among their top priorities, pointing to a ten percent increase compared to the previous year.

Artificial Intelligence Integration

About seventy percent of personnel stated that they use artificial intelligence in some capacity, while the proportion of personnel using artificial intelligence on a daily basis has risen above thirty-five percent.

Current Challenges and Goals

Although budget constraints continue to be seen as a barrier at a rate of sixty-one percent, agencies continue to turn to advanced technologies to enhance situational awareness and operational efficiency.
