Experts issued warnings against complaints of skin dryness and itching that arise with the cooling of the weather. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Oğuz Kılıç, a Dermatology Specialist from Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital, drew attention to the importance of proper cleansing and moisturizing habits to protect the skin barrier in cold weather.

Effects of Cold Weather on Skin

The drop in air temperatures and decrease in humidity levels in autumn and winter can increase complaints of skin dryness, flaking, and itching. Skin tightness and itching starting in the evening hours are among the signs indicating that the skin's natural protective barrier has weakened.

Sensitive Groups at Risk

Seasonal skin dryness is not seen in the same way in every individual. Children, the elderly, those with chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and ichthyosis patients are particularly at higher risk. In addition, these dryness symptoms can be experienced more prominently in diabetes and thyroid patients.

Things to Consider When Taking a Shower

Long and hot showers are among the most important habits that increase skin dryness. To prevent this, experts recommend taking short and lukewarm showers, and gently drying the skin after the shower without rubbing it.

Choosing and Using the Right Moisturizer

The skin needs to be supported with appropriate moisturizers without waiting for it to dry completely. Products containing hyaluronic acid, urea, petrolatum, and glycerin strengthen the skin barrier, while thicker-consistency products are recommended during the winter months. It is also important for sensitive individuals to turn to fragrance-free and simple-ingredient products.
