Artificial Intelligence and the Church Discussed at the Wisdom in Faith and AI Conference
At the conference held at Calvin’s Fine Arts Center, it was emphasized that churches and society must establish an active dialogue in the face of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Participants agreed on setting personal limits on the use of artificial intelligence in order to protect human vulnerability.
Experts and participants who gathered at the 'Wisdom in Faith and AI' conference held at Calvin’s Fine Arts Center laid out the societal impacts of artificial intelligence. Underlining that lessons must be learned from past mistakes during the social media era, speakers recommended implementing temporal, spatial, and categorical restrictions to limit the uncontrolled power of artificial intelligence.
Within the scope of the conference, Megan Sullivan drew attention to the work of the DELTA network supported by the $50 million Lily grant, while Andy Crouch discussed the concept of human finitude. Concrete proposals that stood out in the discussions included establishing AI-free Sundays, creating AI-free home and church environments, and avoiding the use of artificial intelligence in personal relationships.
