Artificial Intelligence Awareness Shapes University Students' Career Preferences
A study published in Nature Scientific Reports reveals how university students' awareness of artificial intelligence triggers 'boundaryless career' inclinations through job insecurity and intrinsic motivation.
A new study published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports examined the effects of university students' awareness of artificial intelligence technologies on their career development processes. The research shows that students' perceptions that AI could change future jobs are steering them away from traditional career paths and toward more flexible and adaptable 'boundaryless career' models.
The study defines AI awareness as the perception that technologies such as robots and algorithmic management could affect future employment. Researchers state that this awareness triggers two fundamental psychological responses in students: intrinsic motivation, defined as the desire for competence development, and future job insecurity, which is the anxiety of involuntary unemployment.
Combining Conservation of Resources Theory and Self-Determination Theory, the authors argue that these factors push students toward boundaryless career paths requiring project-based work, cross-platform employment, and continuous skills adaptation. These findings aim to help universities' career guidance systems develop more supportive strategies for students adapting to technological changes.
