How AI is transforming hurricane forecasts

Hurricane forecasters are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence technology into their processes, rapidly transforming the field of meteorology. During Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall off the coast of Florida in early October, Google DeepMind's AI model provided a more accurate track forecast than traditional physics-based models.

While traditional physics-based models use real-time atmospheric data such as temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind shear, AI models analyze thousands of past storms and atmospheric data collected through neural networks. Although the Google DeepMind model showed great success in tracking the storm's path, it was not as successful as the NHC's ensemble forecasts in determining the storm's intensity or strength. Therefore, forecasters continue to use a combination of models and rely on human expertise.
