Call for global oversight for artificial intelligence from Norway and Finland
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb launched a joint call to action to strengthen international cooperation in order to ensure the safety of advanced artificial intelligence models.
In September 2026, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb issued a joint 'Call to Action' for the establishment of global oversight and control mechanisms on advanced artificial intelligence models.
This initiative, joined by many countries around the world, aims to manage the security risks posed by artificial intelligence through international cooperation. The leaders argue that traditional power-centric strategies are insufficient to cope with threats such as cyberattacks, pandemics, and the proliferation of dangerous technologies in a multipolar world where no single state acts as a hegemonic power.
Stating that international institutions such as the UN, WTO, and WHO should be strengthened within this context, Store and Stubb propose developing robust global standards based on multilateralism for artificial intelligence governance.
