Psychotherapist Umut Özdemir is conducting an experiment to understand whether artificial intelligence chatbots can offer effective psychotherapy and whether participants can distinguish between human and AI responses.

The study conducted by psychotherapist Umut Özdemir aims to assess whether participants can distinguish between questions and answers generated by a human therapist and those by artificial intelligence, and which one they find more valuable. The project also includes individuals who already use artificial intelligence for their mental health.

Within the scope of the study, experts such as psychologist Bertolt Meyer, psychotherapist Johanna Löchner, and ethicist Judith Simon discuss the psychological, social, and ethical challenges brought by the integration of artificial intelligence into mental health care. The findings obtained will be presented to audiences in a documentary film broadcast on DW English screens between October 29 and November 2, 2026.
