Center for Countering Disinformation Warns About Social Media Age Verification
The Presidency's Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) issued an e-Government warning against fraudsters exploiting the social media age verification regulation set for November 1, 2026.
The Presidency's Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) has warned citizens against fraudsters taking advantage of the social media age verification regulation that will enter into force on November 1, 2026.
The Presidency's Center for Countering Disinformation announced that malicious individuals exploiting the social media age verification regulation are attempting to trap citizens with fake messages. According to the statement, the regulation coming into effect on November 1, 2026, is being abused by fraudsters. It has been detected that personal and financial information is being targeted through fake SMS messages, emails, and links containing phrases such as "Your account will be closed" and "Verify your age immediately."
DMM reminded that under the new regulation, which is based on protecting children in digital environments and ensuring the security of personal data, age verification will be conducted exclusively via an "age verification token" obtained through the e-Government Gateway. No identity information is transferred to social media platforms within the system; only information regarding whether the user meets the age limit is transmitted to the platforms.
It was stated that the application will be valid only for newly opened accounts as of November 1, while the verification period for existing social media accounts will continue until March 31, 2027. Therefore, DMM urged citizens not to pay any attention to messages aimed at creating panic.
