Bankruptcy Process and Disney Agreement

California-based artificial intelligence startup Character.ai has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a result of the challenges it has faced.

As it entered bankruptcy proceedings, the company signed an intellectual property licensing agreement worth $20 million with entertainment giant Disney.

Legal Issues and Past Developments

The Menlo Park-based startup had faced lawsuits regarding copyright infringement and allegations that the chatbots on its platform harmed the mental health of teenagers.

The company and Google had settled various lawsuits filed by families earlier this year.

Current Status of the Platform

While a court-supervised sales process is targeted to be conducted by the end of the year, the platform continues to operate normally under the leadership of CEO Colin Adams.

The application, which has more than 20 million monthly active users, continues its operations without interruption during this process.
