China proposes UN-centered model for artificial intelligence governance
At a forum held in Xiong’an, China proposed a framework for the governance of artificial intelligence technologies that is UN-led, open-source focused, and increases the representation of the Global South.
China has called for a multilateral oversight mechanism in setting global rules for the technology sector, arguing that the United Nations should play a central role in future regulations of artificial intelligence technologies.
The consensus document titled 'Global Governance: The Xiong’an Vision,' released after a three-day forum in the Beijing-administered Xiong’an New Area, is based on international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. The event, attended by delegates from more than 90 countries, aims to expand access to frontier technologies by encouraging open-source AI development and sharing research findings.
This initiative by China aims to create a counterweight to the current dominant position of the United States in setting AI rules. Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, also stated that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies has made the need for new international governance frameworks urgent.
