Former security village guard Şükrü Akçay, who was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for intentional murder regarding the 2021 killing of shepherd Musa Çelik in Mardin's Midyat district and whose sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation, has been captured in Adana during a police operation. It was revealed that Akçay's videos, posted under a different name on social media accounts while he was a fugitive, reached millions of views.
Murder and Trial Process
In the dispute that broke out over a debt issue on November 21, 2021, in the Çamyurt neighborhood of Mardin's Midyat district, shepherd Musa Çelik was shot and killed with a long-barreled weapon. Following the incident, the investigation led to the arrest of the-security village guard Şükrü Akçay and his brothers M.A. and Veysi Akçay.
Court Verdict and Confirmation of Sentences
In the trial held at the Midyat Heavy Penal Court, defendant M.A. was acquitted, while Veysi Akçay was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for armed threat. The main defendant, Şükrü Akçay, was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for intentional murder, and his sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation.
Millions of Views on Social Media
It was determined that Şükrü Akçay, who was wanted after his sentence was upheld, had opened social media accounts under a different name while on the run. It was found that the videos shared by the fugitive convict, using the name Şirin Akçay, reached millions of views.
Operation Carried Out in Adana
Teams from the Adana Provincial Police Directorate's Public Order Branch Homicide Bureau conducted approximately 200 hours of security camera and physical surveillance work. As a result of these efforts, it was determined that Şükrü Akçay was hiding in a house in the Yeşilyurt neighborhood of the Seyhan district.
Sent to Prison
Captured at the address where he was hiding in an operation by police teams, Şükrü Akçay was referred to the courthouse after procedures at the police headquarters. Following the completion of court procedures, the arrested convict was sent to prison.
