Data Center Debates Take Center Stage in 2026 US Midterm Elections
Rapidly expanding data centers have become a key campaign issue in the 2026 US midterm elections, fueled by growing local opposition.
The rapid growth of data centers and the associated infrastructure costs have drawn backlash from communities across the US, turning into a significant campaign issue in congressional and gubernatorial races. Candidates from both parties are proposing moratoriums, energy cost regulations, and tax changes.
Funds from the tech sector continue to pour into these races. Leading the Future, a super PAC backed by Marc Andreessen and OpenAI President Greg Brockman, has spent $45 million in one year. Public First Action, supported by Anthropic and focused on AI safety, announced it has raised $80 million. Newly formed super PACs like Tomorrow Together have also launched a $4 million advertising campaign for competitive House races, focusing on data center development and AI safety messaging.
Most candidates are taking steps to distance themselves from data centers to appease voter concerns regarding unregulated construction in their local districts. Candidate stances on supporting a full moratorium on developments vary; some Democrats appear more inclined to support a pause, while some Republicans advocate for local control, and others express the need for a definitive halt.
