Elon Musk Takes Step to Restrict Ukraine's Satellite Network
By decision of Elon Musk, SpaceX's Starshield satellite communication network was slowed down in Ukraine, and the restrictions affected drone operations.
In line with Elon Musk's decision, temporary restrictions and speed reductions were introduced on Ukraine's use of SpaceX's Starshield satellite communication network; this situation negatively affected military communications and drone operations.
According to sources, the satellite service used in Ukraine for drone operations, striking specific targets, and protecting regions was significantly slowed down last week. It was noted that Elon Musk held multiple discussions with administration officials prior to this directive and sought clarity regarding the president's thoughts on the matter. Musk had expressed discomfort with his company appearing to profit from the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials and soldiers reported that sudden difficulties began to be experienced with Starshield equipment starting Tuesday. While sources from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that SpaceX unilaterally enforced the restrictions, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted on Tuesday that the Pentagon did not intervene in the service. The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported on Wednesday that system usage remained restricted.
