Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuna Pehlivanoğlu from Medicana Kadıköy Hospital has issued a warning regarding the risk of osteoporosis, which accelerates during menopause due to the decline in estrogen levels, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, a balanced diet, and regular exercise.
The Role of Estrogen in Bone Health
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuna Pehlivanoğlu from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Medicana Kadıköy Hospital pointed out the critical role of the hormone estrogen in maintaining bone health, stating that bone loss can accelerate during menopause as this hormone declines.
Factors Affecting Bone Health
Stating that women should prioritize bone health from an early age, Pehlivanoğlu said that age, genetic characteristics, nutrition, and physical activity are among the fundamental factors that directly affect bone health.
Symptoms and Screenings for Osteoporosis
Noting that osteoporosis can progress for a long time without showing symptoms, the expert emphasized that signs such as loss of height, back pain, and hunching should definitely not be ignored.
Touching upon the great importance of bone density screening for women aged 65 and over, Pehlivanoğlu stated that personalized treatment plans should be implemented according to risk factors.
Treatment and Lifestyle Recommendations
The importance of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, regular exercise, and, when necessary, medication and surgical interventions in the treatment process was highlighted.
