FBI: Man Defrauded Women Using AI Hallucinations
An Oregon resident and an accomplice defrauded 26 women through AI and social media by posing as an NFL player or a wealthy developer.
The FBI in the US announced that an individual, along with an accomplice, defrauded at least 26 women across four states, utilizing Google's AI summaries in the process.
Details of the Fraud Scheme
Daejon Labrayae Love, a 35-year-old resident of Oregon, along with 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan, established a complex fraud network targeting at least 26 women across four states. While Love posed as a San Francisco 49ers player or a wealthy Swiss real estate developer, Chan assumed the role of his financial advisor.
The Misleading Role of Artificial Intelligence
Love's heavy posting on social media platforms caused search engines and artificial intelligence features to reflect this misinformation as if it were real. When victims grew suspicious and conducted internet searches, Google's AI summaries accepted and repeated these claims as true.
Investment Lies and Loans
The duo persuaded women they met through virtual dating apps to invest money in fake investment opportunities, pocketing the gains they generated. According to the FBI investigation file, some women were even persuaded to take out loans in order to fund this fake investment scheme.
Deception Through Screenshots
Love took screenshots of these misleading search engine results and used them to reinforce his own lies. According to investigative documents, Love showed these AI results to victims as proof in his social media posts.
