There Are Signs of Serious Trouble in the Data Center Industry

While serious financial and logistical issues have emerged in the data center sector—which has received billions of dollars in investments alongside the artificial intelligence boom—it has been reported that 47 major projects were canceled during the year.

According to the RegLayer database and a Financial Times report, 47 major data center projects planned to bolster artificial intelligence infrastructure were canceled this year. Meanwhile, analysts at the research firm Bernstein believe that only around 35 percent of the planned facilities are feasible.

High interest rates, fluctuating bond markets, and campaigns waged by local communities against the projects are threatening targets in the sector. Efforts by labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI to accelerate the process regardless of costs, alongside declines in CoreWeave shares, are heightening concerns within the industry.
