Florida A&M students join nationwide walkout calling for a pause on artificial intelligence development

Gathering under the Dream Defenders organization at Florida A&M University, students supported a national action calling for a pause in artificial intelligence work. During the march held on Tuesday, students voiced concerns regarding AI-powered surveillance systems, privacy rights, and future job opportunities.

Part of a national day of action expected to take place in over 50 locations nationwide, the march demands that the public have a greater say in how technology is used, receive a share of economic benefits, and see increased security measures. FAMU students focused particularly on the potential impacts of AI-based surveillance on communities and privacy issues.

Adriana Clanton, a student participating in the action, stated that they took part in this march to defend society and future generations as a young workforce. Clanton highlighted that candidates are directly rejected by artificial intelligence systems instead of human recruiters during job applications, emphasizing the need to protect employment opportunities.
