Frequent consumption of sugary snacks triggers the risk of tooth decay in children
It has been announced that the frequent consumption of sugary foods throughout the day in school-age children negatively affects dental health.
Prof. Dr. Gamze Aren, Head of the Department of Pedodontics at Biruni University Faculty of Dentistry, issued warnings to families, stating that the frequent consumption of sugary and tooth-adhering snacks among school-age children increases the risk of decay.
The role of consumption frequency in decay formation
It was reported that consuming sugary foods and beverages at frequent intervals throughout the day causes teeth to be repeatedly exposed to an acidic environment.
It was emphasized that even if a child does not consume a very high amount of sugar in a single day, taking sugary foods at frequent intervals exposes the teeth to an adverse oral environment.
Risky foods and snack habits
Attention was drawn to the fact that the continuous consumption of snacks such as biscuits, cakes, candies, and chocolates increases the risk of decay.
It was stated that snacks should be planned and should not turn into a continuous snacking habit throughout the day.
Sticky foods remaining on the tooth surface
It was conveyed that certain foods can remain on the tooth surface for longer periods, and particularly sticky and sugary foods should not be consumed frequently during snacks.
Healthy snack alternatives
It was stated that correct choices should be made in terms of oral and dental health when placing snacks into children's school bags.
It was shared that fresh fruits, cheese, and sugar-free alternatives can be preferred, and water should be the primary choice for beverages.
Toothbrushing habit during the school period
It was expressed that the changing sleep and school hours following the summer holiday could disrupt the habit of brushing teeth.
It was emphasized that brushing should not be neglected, especially due to the rush of getting to school in the morning.
Regular oral and dental care
It was pointed out that it is of great importance for children to brush their teeth regularly in the morning and at night.
It was recorded that brushing teeth after lunch whenever possible would be supportive, and if it is not possible at school, morning and night brushing must definitely not be skipped.
The importance of dentist check-ups
It was stated that regular dentist check-ups play an important role in the early detection of problems at an initial stage.
