The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has publicly unveiled its 2027-2032 strategic plan, making the oversight of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies a priority for the next five years. Acting as Congress's auditing body, the agency aims to help the House of Representatives and the Senate anticipate emerging science and technology trends, opportunities, and risks, including artificial intelligence.
Acting U.S. Comptroller General Orice Williams Brown stated in the report that Congress's needs and priorities are changing rapidly, emphasizing that the agency must remain agile. GAO's strategic goals include examining how the federal government addresses the national security impacts of artificial intelligence, adversarial use risks, autonomous systems, and the integrity of AI-supported decision-making processes.
Additionally, the agency plans to modernize its organization by facilitating recruitment in specialized fields such as data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. Jennifer Franks, Director of GAO's Center for Enhanced Cybersecurity, stated that continuous investment in personnel and resources is necessary for the agency to keep pace with artificial intelligence threats.
