High-speed train crash kills at least 68 people in Spain

At least 68 people lost their lives and numerous individuals were injured following a collision between two high-speed trains operating between Madrid and Seville in central Spain. The accident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, took place between the municipalities of Mora and Orgaz, approximately 140 kilometers south of Madrid.

The train carrying 397 passengers, traveling from Madrid to Seville and operated by the Spanish state railway company Renfe, rear-ended an Iryo train belonging to a private rail operator that was stopped on the tracks. It was reported that the Iryo train, carrying 147 passengers, had stopped on the tracks due to a computer malfunction. Minister of Transport Óscar Puente stated that following the system failure, the 24-hour control center in Madrid was activated, but an "inexplicable" decision was made for the trains to resume movement without any speed restrictions.
