Honolulu named American World War II Heritage City

Honolulu has been designated as the American World War II Heritage City for 2026 by the National Park Service.

The City and County of Honolulu became one of 10 jurisdictions selected for its homefront contributions during World War II and its efforts to preserve this history. The National Park Service highlighted the city's role in becoming a central base for military operations in the Pacific following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Evaluating the process, Mayor Rick Blangiardi stated that this title is a great honor for the people of Oahu, who resisted following the Pearl Harbor attack and transformed the island into a critical center for Pacific military operations. The program allows only one local government entity in each state or territory to receive this title.

Since 2020, similar title designations have been made across 46 states and two territories.
