International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced that the global economy is approaching the limits of its resilience against successive shocks. Georgieva called on countries to implement fiscal discipline and tight monetary policy in the face of high uncertainties, rising debt costs, and risks in artificial intelligence investments.

Resilience at the Limit in the Global Economy

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that the global economy is approaching the limit of its resilience against successive shocks. Emphasizing that the global economic outlook faces high uncertainties, significant vulnerabilities, and downside risks, Georgieva stated that the resilience seen in recent years should not be assumed to be permanent.

Lack of Fiscal Discipline in Advanced Economies

Georgieva noted that many countries failed to adequately utilize the post-pandemic recovery period to rebuild their fiscal buffers, stating that advanced economies performed the worst in this regard.

Pointing out that every new economic shock increases debt levels, the IMF Managing Director emphasized that public revenues must be increased and expenditures rationalized.

Rising Debt Service Costs

Stating that despite the decline in global debt levels, debt service costs have increased due to rising interest rates, Georgieva expressed that high inflation lingering in many regions is driving interest rates upward.

Pressure on Emerging Markets

Georgieva noted that high bond yields in advanced economies spill over into emerging markets and tighten financing conditions.

She stated that the risk of economic divergence among countries is particularly dangerous for developing nations that have fallen behind in the development process.

Risks in Artificial Intelligence Investments

The IMF Chief stated that the rapid growth in artificial intelligence investments poses a new risk for the global economy.

She pointed out that a reversal of investment trends could negatively impact economic activity and other sectors.

Fiscal and Monetary Policy Frameworks

Stating that the IMF calls on countries to strengthen their fiscal and monetary policy frameworks to protect macroeconomic and financial stability, Georgieva said that the current period may be appropriate for many countries to pursue a prudent yet hawkish monetary policy.
