İstanbul Science Summit 2026'da çocuk gelişiminde ilk 1000 günün önemi vurgulandı

Organized in collaboration with the Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation and The Nutrition Society, the Istanbul Science Summit 2026 brought together current scientific data in the field of child health and development. Prof. Dr. Elif Nursel Özmert from Hacettepe University stated that the first 1000 days, covering the pregnancy period and the first two years after birth, is the period with the highest plasticity in determining an individual's lifelong health profile.

Prof. Dr. Özmert stated that genetic heritage is not the sole determinant, and that factors such as nutrition, stress, and environmental pollutants reshape the functioning of genes through epigenetic changes. It was noted that these processes could form the basis for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

Emphasizing that obesity, iron deficiency, and vitamin D deficiency are the primary risk factors for child health in Turkey, Özmert touched upon the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and the correct supplements in the subsequent period.

Drawing attention to the importance of the nurturing care approach, Özmert stated that in order for children to realize their potential, responsive care, a safe environment, and early education opportunities must be provided as a whole, in addition to health and nutrition. In this context, interactive book reading starting from the 4th month and avoiding screen time for the first two years were recommended.
