Iran Calls on US to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that their offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains valid, provided the US lifts sanctions and ends port blockades.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Baghdad that their seven-point proposal for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is still being evaluated by the US side. The Tehran administration argues that if the US lifts sanctions and ends regional conflicts, the strait could be opened within six days, followed by the commencement of negotiations.
The proposal submitted by Iran in mid-September includes seven key conditions, such as the US lifting port blockades, ending sanctions on oil exports, and ceasing hostilities on regional fronts. Araghchi stated that if the US meets these conditions, the process could move forward rapidly.
One of the main points of disagreement in the negotiations is the US insistence on prioritizing the nuclear program. US Vice President JD Vance had stated that for the war to end, Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity. Tehran, on the other hand, argues that the priority should be ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz and resuming trade.
Assessment: It appears that negotiations between the parties are stalled due to the divergence of views between US demands regarding the nuclear program and Iran's conditions for the lifting of sanctions.
