It Has Been Determined That ChatGPT Creates Detailed Psychological Profiles of Users
A study presented at the ACM Web Conference 2026 revealed that ChatGPT builds digital profiles of users using data obtained from private chats. The research highlights the privacy risks posed by the artificial intelligence memory system regarding personal data and psychological insights.
A study presented at the ACM Web Conference 2026 by researchers from Germany, India, and the Netherlands showed that OpenAI's ChatGPT model tracks user inputs to create comprehensive digital profiles. In the research examining chat logs obtained from 80 users, 2,050 memory entries belonging to 65 users were identified.
According to the research results, 96 percent of the detected memory entries were generated directly by the chatbot. While 28 percent of this data constitutes personal data under GDPR standards, 52 percent contains insights into users' psychological states. Abhisek Dash, the lead author of the study, stated that artificial intelligence models collect intimate information by assuming roles such as a counselor or friend, and that this situation may pose risks such as political polarization or the reinforcement of biases.
It is known that OpenAI has made updates to its memory system since the collection of the study data and offers users an opt-out option. However, researchers warn that the lack of boundaries in artificial intelligence interactions leads to next-generation privacy issues.
