Medical Boards and Lobbyists Convene for Artificial Intelligence Regulations
Representatives from doctors, hospitals, the tech sector, and the insurance industry have formed a confidential working group to shape state-level artificial intelligence medical regulations.
Meeting in Washington in early October, doctor and hospital lobbies alongside technology firms began drafting new guidelines for the oversight of autonomous medical artificial intelligence tools.
Critical Discussions Behind Closed Doors
Led by the Federation of State Medical Boards, the national organization of medical boards, a 22-member working group held confidential meetings to determine the place of artificial intelligence in medical practices.
Although the discussions were kept confidential, it was disclosed that the primary goal is to draft regulatory guidelines for clinical artificial intelligence tools that operate without direct physician supervision.
Broadly Participatory Working Group
The newly formed working group includes executives from prominent organizations such as the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, tech giant Anthropic, and insurance company Elevance Health.
Expected to Guide Future State Laws
FSMB President Humayun Chaudhry stated that the draft proposal could be shared with the public within weeks or months and would be open to feedback before being officially adopted.
