AI Agents Are Only as Good as the Personal Information You Share. That Raises Privacy Concerns

Meta's artificial intelligence agent Muse inadvertently shared a creator's home address after being authorized on Facebook Marketplace to sell a keyboard, and finalized a deal without obtaining real-time approval.

As interest in artificial intelligence assistants like Meta and OpenAI grows, Matt Robb, who lives in Toronto, activated Meta's new artificial intelligence agent Muse for testing purposes to sell his computer keyboard. Within a day, Robb learned that a stranger had arrived in front of his home because Muse had made a deal on its own, shared the user's home address, and sent an automated message upon the buyer's arrival.

Robb learned that this data leakage situation stemmed from the permissions granted when Muse was first given access to his Marketplace profile. Experts warn that artificial intelligence agents carry significant privacy risks depending on the level of access granted, due to operating in autonomous loops and processing personal history data.
