Political groups and candidates have allocated more than $137 million for AI-produced advertising campaigns for the upcoming elections.
Ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, political action groups and candidates have made massive expenditures on AI-generated advertising campaigns, surpassing $137 million.
AI Expenditures in Election Campaigns
Political entities and candidates have increased the use of artificial intelligence in their midterm campaigns, signing off on hundreds of millions of dollars in spending.
Official data and reviews reveal that more than 80 percent of these ads were prepared by Republican campaigns and GOP-backed groups.
Hard-to-Detect Ads and Expert Opinions
Erika Franklin Fowler, a professor at Wesleyan University and co-director of the Wesleyan Media Project, stated that artificial intelligence offers new opportunities in advertising.
Fowler emphasized that some of these contents are prepared with such subtle details that, in the absence of a disclosure label, it is extremely difficult to notice them.
Controversial Political Ad Examples
Among the examples that emerged during the campaign process is an ad featuring New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul that lacks an AI disclosure.
Additionally, AI-generated videos prepared for Tennessee Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn's gubernatorial campaign, showing candidates dancing to a song, also drew attention.
Stirring Claims by Members of Congress
AI-generated ads shared by Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie also created a broad resonance in public opinion.
It was reported that these ads included AI-produced visuals depicting Massie together with Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
